La necesidad de un libro sobre el género Stelis Swartz en la literatura de las orquídeas es bien sentida en la actualidad por cuanto se ha renovado el interés por las orquídeas miniatura. Este Compendio pretende llenar ese vacío. Alrededor de 637 epítetos de Stelis habían sido publicados hasta el año 2001; de este número se considera que 379, aproximadamente, son especies Tipo y se describen en este libro, la mayoría de ellas con ilustración, acompañadas con 34 planchas a color. Cada especie ofrece la referencia original y bibliografía adicional así como sinónimos, distribución, y etimología; se añaden notas finales para resaltar las características principales de la planta y sus relaciones con otras especies. Los capítulos iniciales ofrecen una presentación bilingüe inglés-español, en tanto que las descripciones se encuentran solo en inglés. El lector notará que se usaron los términos botánicos más comunes para facilitar la interpretación del texto.

The need for a book on the genus Stelis Sw. in the orchid literature is undeniable; even more so, now when there is a renewed interest in miniature orchids. This book pretends to fill the existing gap. About 637 epithets of Stelis were published until the year 2001; of that number some 379 Stelis are considered to be Type species. In this Compendium they are described and most of them are also illustrated and accompanied by 34 color plates. Each species is presented with its original reference, additional bibliography, synonyms, distribution and etymology. A note is added to highlight the main features of the plant and its relation with other species. Introductory chapters are in both English and Spanish languages; descriptions are in English. Readers will notice that only the most commonly used botanical terms were employed to facilitate interpretation of the text.
